Flute Instructor – Sarah Tiedemann
An accomplished flutist hailed for her rich tone and fierce command of the instrument, Sarah Tiedemann has carved out a unique and varied career as a performing artist. Currently serving as Principal Flute of the Salem Chamber Orchestra and the Portland Festival Symphony, and Second Flute in the Portland Columbia Symphony, she has also played locally with the Oregon Symphony, Portland Opera, Vancouver Symphony, and Portland Chamber Orchestra. In addition, Sarah has performed throughout the United States and Europe in groups including the Swedish Radio Symphony, Royal Stockholm Philharmonic, Norrkoping Symphony, and Boston Philharmonic. A faculty member at Willamette University and Concordia University, she frequently serves as a clinician and adjudicator throughout the Northwest and maintains private studios in Portland, Salem, and Hillsboro.
In 2004 Sarah’s world premiere performance of Derek Jacoby’s Flute Concerto was broadcast internationally on WGBH’s Art of the States. The following year she was featured as piccoloist in the Swedish Radio Symphony’s live European broadcast of Luciano Berio’s Folk Songs. Also passionate about performance art, Sarah has appeared in fully staged performances of Peter Maxwell Davies’ Miss Donnithorne’s Maggot and George Crumb’s Vox Balaenae. She has premiered further works by composers including Gunther Schuller, Montserrat Torras, Stratis Minakakis, and Dan VanHassell.
Sarah received a Bachelor of Music degree in Flute Performance from Oberlin Conservatory, followed by a Master of Music degree in Flute Performance from New England Conservatory. In 2002 she was the recipient of a Jacob K. Javits Fellowship in Performance from the U.S. Department of Education, and she then went on to pursue postgraduate studies at the Royal College of Music in Stockholm, Sweden on a fellowship from the American-Scandinavian Foundation and a travel grant from the American Women’s Club of Sweden. Her teachers have included Michel Debost, Jeanne Baxtresser, John Heiss, Tobias Carron and Karen Gifford. Sarah performs on a Muramatsu flute with a Lafin headjoint, and a Hammig piccolo. In her spare time, Sarah also enjoys writing, cooking, hiking and distance running.
