Counselors

The success of YMA is largely based on the strength, enthusiasm, and creativity of the counselor group. Counselors serve as the primary supervisors and caretakers for the students. Most YMA counselors are either in the later years of high school or are currently attending college. Counselors are equally divided among the various subject areas of the camp, providing students with role models in the classroom as well as the dorms.

Counselors are carefully screened and selected from the group of Counselors in Training (CITs). Students who have completed the ninth grade or above are automatically designated as CITs. Each CIT is assigned to a counselor for the duration of the session. CITs assist the counselors with various duties to allow them to demonstrate leadership abilities and in order to ensure a successful experience for all students. At the end of the session, CITs are evaluated by counselors and faculty in five categories: Ability to work with students, class work, respecting rules, leadership, and proficiency in subject area. If counselor openings exist, CITs with the highest evaluations will be invited for an interview. This rigorous and competitive selection process ensures that only the most qualified candidates who are familiar with the structure of the camp are selected to be counselors.
